Director: Dr. Mark Franklin, Professor of Political Science, University
of Houston.
This
study examines the ability of the public and political parties to conform
to the high standards associated with a representative democracy. Does
the public have the information and interest necessary to make voting a
rational method for stating their policy preferences? Do the parties fulfill
their responsibility to campaign on distinct issues and fulfill their campaign
promises once in office.
Through
the use of public opinion polls, content analysis of party manifestos,
and aggregate government spending data, this study seeks to contribute
to our understanding about the strengths and weaknesses of institutional
settings in accurately representing public preferences. |
