Tectonic Evolution of the Karakoram Fault System in West Tibet

My last two field seasons to west Tibet have focused on mapping transects across the Karakoram fault system between Zhaxigang and Barga.  Several key questions regarding the evolution of this fault system have been addressed, such as, the timing and magnitude of slip, and its relationship with other key structures in the area (Gurla Mandhata detachment and South Kailas thrust).  Utilizing a variety of geochronometers has enabled the timing of slip along the key structures to be narrowly bracketed.  Integrating my results with those of Paul Kapp's along the Banggong-Nujiang suture zone has allowed us to characterize and build a more complete picture of the structural framework of west and central Tibet.

We are actively collecting data from these regions of Tibet and encourage questions and/or discussion.

During the Spring of 2002, 2003, and 2004 we will be working in far western Nepal trying to better understand how the Karakoram fault system extends eastwards passed the Mt. Kailas region.
