Lecture 9
The Stars

The stars are suns

H-R Diagram

Demo on determining Luminosity and Size of stars...

From Blackbody model, can determine Temperature of stars
(graph and table). E.g., for Orion's stars

Plot this Temperature and Luminosity together in an H-R Diagram
(c.f., Chaisson Figs 17.13-15 on pp.464-5. Similar to a Color vs. Magnitude diagram

Diagonal of H-R diagram represents main-sequence stars.
(c.f., typical properties of main sequence stars, Chaisson Table 17.6 )

Know H-R diagram, including main sequence, white dwarfs and red giants

Star distances in our solar neighborhood (e.g., Proxima Centauri 4.3 LY)

Star sizes

Scale model #2.5

In our previous Earth = marble model, nearest star would be about 27,000 km. So Earth itself couldn't fit the model.

Making Sun = marble (1/100 scale) then Earth = grain of sand orbiting 1 meter away. Nearest star, Proxima Centauri, would be about 270 km away.
