Exercise 7 : Remote Sensing

Read the section on Remote Sensing. In particular, read the sections on the electromagnetic spectrum, energy interactions and digital images. These three short summaries will provide a good background for the resources that follow. Before you leave this site, look though one or two of the sets of images in the Gallery.

NASA has been a leader in promoting a greater understanding the Earth and other bodies through remote sensing. The Observatorium is another NASA site with a good introduction to remote sensing basics. The Search for Ubar is a particularly well-done analysis of one application of remote sensing in archaeology.

Briefly describe your reaction to the Ubar study. I am curious, is this format (the Internet) one which is satisfactory for you? That is, are you satisfied to read material on the screen or do you feel the need to make a hard copy?

The Color Landform Atlas of the United States has "false color" shaded relief maps of the 50 states.

The OnLine Class Should do the following

Obtain the maps of Washington and Oregon print copies. If you turn the plots sideways and print at 67%, you should be able to get the entire map on a single page.

Locate the major volcanoes of the Cascade Mountains on these images.

The Face to Face Class Should do the following

Obtain the image of Texas and locate several major geographic features. Hand in with analysis of the Ubar Study.
