Approximately 1,000 students were surveyed in September, 1999. Each was asked to evaluate the room in which they were taking the survey.
160 Fleming
Three sections were being taught in room 160 Fleming - Biology 1310 and Chemistry 1331 (2). 160 Fleming is one of our older classrooms but the faculty have made a major effort to secure funding for technology - data projectors, two computers, a white board, and other devices are available to the instructors.
Four faculty evaluated 160 Fleming -- B, C, C, D. Three of the respondents use the technology but the fourth does not and finds that the technology is detrimental - evaluation of D.
It appears that students feel the same way. In the two CHEM 1331 sections the average grade was a 2.6 and the median was a B (total of 129). In the Biology 1310 class (which does not use the technology) the average grade was a 2.05 and the median was a C (total of 180).
A significant part of the negative responses for the entire survey more really about the lack of fit between their classroom and what the instructor needed or was comfortable.
The 226 students in PGH evaluated the room with a median of B and an average of 2.89
Two sections of Geology 1330 were taught in 116 SR were surveyed and the responses were nearly identical. Two faculty members evaluated this room as A and B. The students in class 1 awarded an average evaluation of 3.05 and a median of B. Students in class 2 awarded an average evaluation of 2.75 and a median of B.
