English 1303 takes up essential writing for university students.  This class, which should be taken during your first semester at the University of Houston, is designed to make you think, organize, and express effectively your ideas and those of others you have assimilated.

Books Required:  Axelrod & Cooper, The St. Martin's Guide to Writing (Short 6th ed). Fulwiler & Hayakawa, The Blair Handbook (3rd ed).

The class will concentrate on writing, and you should be prepared to write regularly.  By being prepared, I mean that you should have time, quiet, interest, and energy for the process of writing.  It is important that you take the class seriously, that you approach the subject with positive expectations, and that you earnestly seek to improve (not necessarily perfect) your writing skills.

Class requirements:  You must submit five essays during the course of the semester.  This includes one mid-term essay and one final essay both of which will be written in class under monitored conditions.  In addition you will be writing answers to discussion questions and short critical remarks on other students' essays. You will receive a total of six grades during the course of the semester  one grade on each essay you submit and one grade on your discussion responses.

Grading:  The following is a break down on how the grades will be weighted.

First Essay        10%

Second Essay    10%

Mid Term Essay    15%

Fourth Essay       20%

Final Discussion   15%
