IVs, DVs, & Extraneous Variable Examples
Your Grade in this course
DV = Your numeric grade (ratio scale)
IV = Number of hours studied (ratio scale)
Extraneous variable = Weather, time of day, difficulty of class
Distributions
Normal Distribution
Bell curve
Mean, Median, and Mode are all in the middle of a normal distribution
The shape is symmetrical
The distribution is theoretical
e.g., distribution of heights
Positive distribution
The mean is greater than the median
The tail of the distribution "points" to the right
e.g., salary
Negative distribution
The mean is less than the median
The tail of the distribution "points" to the left
J-Curve
Positively or Negatively skewed
An overwhelming majority of scores are clustered at one end with a few outlying scores to the extreme other end
