The following resources are either free or available through the University of Houston site licenses.

QuickTime Player
At its simplest, QuickTime is software that allows Mac and Windows users to play back audio and video on their computers. But taking a deeper look, QuickTime is many things: a file format, an environment for media authoring, and a suite of applications:
  • QuickTime Player - for playing back audio and video files
  • QuickTime Pro - for flexible multimedia authoring
  • Browser plug-ins - for viewing media within a web page
  • PictureViewer - for working with still images (Windows only; Preview is available on Mac OS X)
  • QuickTime Streaming Server - for delivering streaming media files on the Internet in real time
  • Darwin Streaming Server - for delivering streaming media with Linux, Solaris, and Windows
  • QuickTime Broadcaster - for delivering live events on the Internet
  • MPEG-2 Playback Component - for playing back MPEG-2 content.

Shockwave Player Shockwave Player is the web standard for powerful multimedia playback. The Shockwave Player allows you to view interactive web content like games, business presentations, entertainment, and advertisements from your web browser.

Flash Player Macromedia Flash Player is the universal rich client for delivering effective Macromedia Flash experiences across desktops and devices. Flash lets designers and developers integrate video, text, audio, and graphics into effective experiences that deliver superior results for interactive marketing and presentations, e-learning, and rich Internet applications. Flash is the world's most pervasive software platform, reaching 97% of Internet-enabled desktops worldwide, as well as many popular devices.

Acrobat Reader Adobe® Reader® 6.0 is free software that lets you view and print Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files on a variety of hardware and operating system platforms.

Microsoft Producer Use Microsoft Producer 2003 for Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 to capture and synchronize audio, video, slides, and images, then preview and publish a rich media presentation virtually anywhere for viewing in a Web browser
Impatica Impatica for PowerPoint is a Windows application that converts PowerPoint files into a compressed format that is optimized for streaming over the Internet. Impatica for PowerPoint supports most of the features of PowerPoint, including text, graphics, transitions, animation effects and narration.

Respondus Respondus is a Windows application that enhances the functionality and usability of WebCT's quiz, survey, and self-test tools for instructors and course designers.
