UH-NBA Player Profiles

Thumbnail sketches of various players in UH's NBA.  Remember, the listed characteristics are all relative to our league.  Thus, a player that is listed as 'big and athletic' means the player is 6', can consistently run up and down the court and usually catch passes that hit him in the hands.  A quality 'shooter' is one that can hit 50% of their wide open shots on a good day.

Steve C. - big, strong athletic player that competes hard every game.  Has an extremely quick if somewhat unorthodox shot that will leave you pulling you hair out.  Has returned to the court with a vengence

Nic - powerful defender and rebounder with good athleticism.  Has a vast array of 'circus' shots that go in with uncanny accuracy.  No fun to defend or be defended by.

Jim - MIA - possibly the most complete player in the UH-NBA.  Is comfortable handling the point or off-guard duties.  Has good range and a sneaky quick drive which is made possible by his excellent ball handling skills.  Understands the game and with drive the stake through your heart with the timely shot.  Apparently has gone through an idenity crisis and no longer plays.

Chuck - an enigma in that he often does not bring his 'A' game to the table.  Has great range and a quick release from 15' and out but has difficulty scoring consistently around the basketball.  Opponents eyes light up when he is assigned to guard them.  Lately has been turning the ball over at a prodigious rate.

Jerry - a veteran who often displays vestiges of his heyday.  If left alone will consistently nail the long jumper.  Does a good job of keeping the ball held above his head which enables him to see the court and make effective passes.

Charley - MIA - apparently has let marriage interfere with his good time - a cagey veteran with good strength and understands the game.  Does a good job of keeping the ball up and often hits big shots when left alone.

Johnny - a 'deadly' shooter who cannot be left alone for an instant.  When hot can carry a team to victory.

Jim - possibly the new most complete player in the UH-NBA (though Steve would rightlty argue the point).  Has good size, strong, not rattled by Nic's antics, can bang inside or shoot the mid-range jumper.

Ed - short in stature but has tremendous strength, will challenge you defensively and offensively on every possesion.  Has an irritating ability to go in among the 'trees' and find a way to score, but is quite content to score outside if not challenged.

Ted - a grizzled veteran who is admired by all for his consistent determination to get out there and run with the 'kids'.  Tends to 'go right' with regularity but if left alone will uncurl his long snakelike jumper with deadly accuracy.  Has also been known to fire in outrageous running hooks from the outer limits.

Freddie - a skilled, reasonably athletic player who sometimes is hampered by his teamates inability to see the possibilities during a given play.  Can get his shot off from either inside or out but 'needs' the ball to be effective.  Not afraid to take the big shot.

Chris - a big, athletic player with excellent skills in all areas.  Can go inside or outside, understands the game, can beat you with a well timed pass, shot, steal or rebound.  Does a good job of letting the game 'come' to him but is prone to the long shot despite having Chuck on his team.

D - so good he only goes by his first initial.  An extremely athletic player who is generally unguardable.  Has a sweet up and under move which he can use from 15' and in.  Tends to encourage rebounding in the form of 'go get it' while having a great view from mid-court :)

Lowell - a veteran with good range on his shot.  Has limited quickness which he compensates for by understanding the game.  Does a good job of getting the ball to the 'hot' hand, cannot be left alone in the corner.  Following quadruple knee surgery has regained much of his old quickness.

Dolph - MIA - the legendary 'big' man of the NBA - bears an uncanny resemblance to ex-NBA player Billy Paultz.  Has good size which he uses with devestating efficiency to set monster picks.  Often creates mismatches that occasionally are a benefit to his team.  If he works at keeping the ball above his head will qualitatively change his game.

Walter - a veteran who compensates for his lack of quickness by a keen understanding of the game.  He will make you pay if left alone.

Hugh - MIA - a player with good athleticism and competitive fire which needs to be closely guarded or will can the long setter.  He will drive strong to the right and throw in the power hook if you are not careful.  Hugh is in good shape so presents match-up difficulties for many of us.  We shall see if his recent marriage impacts his game.

Roger - a "roadie" who travels from Clear Lake to show us his wares.  Has surprsing quickness, a quality and strikes at the worst possible time if you are an oppenent.  There are countless examples of how Roger fails to score all game and then comes up with the winning shot.  If he would concentrate more on basketball and less on golf he could be a player to be feared.

Steve - a new member to the league who has all the tools - big, strong, quick, good shot, takes it to the hole well with a nice reverse lay-up, has a good knowledge of the game (of course, not good enough to anticipate all of Freddie's passes) and is a fierce competitor.  Has not adopted Ted's motto that a good day is one that allows you to return to the court the next day.  Steve seems to think winning in order to stay on the floor is an admirable goal.

Agusto - a new member to the league who can play small despite his size.  Has great quickness, a nice shot and can "go to the hole" hard with the best of them.  We need to take it easy on him since his wife is pregnant with their first child.  Is prone to settling for the long outside shot when better opportunities are available.
