• To show the magnitude of _H rxn for a certain amount of substance,  thermochemical equations may have fractional coefficients.

In the reaction

286 kJ is thermochemically equivalent to 1 mol H 2(g), 286 kJ is thermochemically equivalent to 1 ¼2 mol O 2(g), 286 kJ is thermochemically equivalent to 1 mol H 2O(l).

• Use these thermochemically equivalent quantities to find the heat  change when a given amount of substance reacts or is produced.

• Use the heat of reaction, in kJ/mol, to convert moles of a substance  to the equivalent heat change.
