• Given specific heat capacity and mass of a substance being heated,  measure its temperature change to calculate the heat change, q:

q = C x mass x _T

• If an object becomes hotter, _T (i.e., T final ñ T initial ) is positive, the  object gains heat, and q > 0.

Problem: How much heat is needed to raise the temp. of 125g of Cu from 25ƒC to 300ƒC? Specific heat capacity of Cu = 0.387 J/gïK.
