• Energy is lost by the system  in the form of work, so _E  < 0, and w is negative.

• This type of work, in which a volume change occurs against an  external pressure, is called pressure-volume work (PV work).

• Raising external pressure would decrease the volume of the system,  increasing E by doing work on it: _E is positive and w is positive.
