• Each gas in a mixture behaves as if it were the only gas present.

• Thus, the ideal gas law is valid for most gases at ordinary  conditions, whether pure or a mixture.

John Dalton observed that water vapor added to dry air increases the total air pressure by the pressure of the added water vapor:
