Problem: Give the systematic names for the formulas or the formulas for the names of the following compounds: (a) Fe(ClO3)2 (b) Sodium sulfite (c) Ba(OH)2.8H2O
65
Solution:
(a) ClO3ñ is chlorate; since it has a 1- charge, the cation must be Fe 2+. The name is iron(II) chlorate.
(b) Sodium is Na+ ; sulfite is SO32ñ. Therefore, two Na+ ions balance one SO32ñ ion. The formula is Na2SO3 .
(c) Ba2+ is barium; OHñ is hydroxide. There are eight water molecules in each formula unit. The name is barium hydroxide octahydrate.
