- Learn the formulas and the names of some common polyatomic ions given in Table 2.5 .
- The formula for potassium nitrate is KNO3 : each K+ balances one nitrate NO3ñ .
- The formula for sodium carbonate is Na2CO3 : two Na+ balance one CO32ñ .
- If two or more of the same polyatomic ion are present in a formula, the ion appears in parentheses with the subscript written outside.
- For example, calcium nitrate, which contains one Ca2+ and two NO3ñ ions, has the formula Ca(NO3)2.
