• Covalent bonds do occur within some ionic compounds.

• Ionic compounds like CaCO3 contain polyatomic ions.

• Polyatomic ions consist of two or more atoms bonded  covalently and having a net positive or negative charge.

• Calcium carbonate is made up of polyatomic carbonate  anions, CO32- and monatomic calcium cations, Ca2+.

• A polyatomic ion has its own identity and stays together as a  unit during interactions with other ions.
