• Some elements exist in free state (uncombined): noble  gasesóhelium (He), neon (Ne), argon (Ar), krypton (Kr),  xenon (Xe), and radon (Rn)ñ exist as separate atoms.

• Some metals, such as copper (Cu), silver (Ag), gold (Au),  and platinum (Pt), also occur uncombined.

• Oxygen (O), nitrogen (N), and sulfur (S) occur as molecules,  their atoms bonded to others of the same element (N2 and S8) .

• The great majority of elements occur in compounds, that  is, in chemical combination with other elements.

Examples: H2O, NaCl, CaCO3, CH4, C6H12O6
