- Atoms of an element may not be identical in mass.
- All C atoms have six protons (6p+) (Z = 6), but only 98.89% of them have six neutrons (6n0) in the nucleus (A = 12).
- 1.11% of C atoms have 7 n in the nucleus (A = 13); Even fewer (less than 0.01%) have 8 n (A = 14)
- Isotopes of an element are atoms that have different numbers of neutrons and therefore different mass numbers.
- Carbon-12, carbon-13 and carbon-14 are isotopes of C.
- Chemical properties of elements depend on the number of electrons (e ñ), so all isotopes of an element have the same chemical behavior.
