Atomic Number and Mass Number

• The atomic number (Z) of an element equals the number of  protons in the nucleus of each of its atoms.

• All atoms of a given element have the same atomic number.

• Each element has a unique atomic number.

• All carbon atoms (Z= 6) have 6 p+ , all oxygen atoms (Z=8)  have 8 p+ , and all uranium atoms (Z= 92) have 92 p+.
