• In 1811, Amadeo Avogadro (1776-1856) made two  proposals that explained these conflicting results:

• Each hydrogen gas particle and oxygen gas particle is  actually a molecule composed of two atoms. The molecules  split apart and the separate atoms recombine to form water.

• Equal volumes of a gas contain equal numbers of gas  particles (under the same conditions).

• Thus, 2 L H2 gas contain twice the number of gas particles  as 1 L O2 gas and the same number as 2 L H2O vapor.
