Metallic solids: molecular orbital band theory.

• The properties of metalsóhigh electrical and thermal conductivity,  luster, and malleabilityóresult from the nature of metallic bonding.

• Quantum mechanics offers an extension of molecular orbital (MO)  theory, called band theory, to explain metallic bonding.

• A mole of lithium metal, results in a mole of Li atoms combining  to form an extremely large number of delocalized MOs.

• These MOís have energies so closely spaced that they form a  continuum, or band, of MOs.
