- Amorphous solids can typically be found in many shapes and lack the molecular-level order of crystalline solids.
Examples of amorphous solids are butter, most plastics and glass.
- Within a crystal, each particle lies on a specific point. The points form a regular pattern throughout the crystal called the crystal lattice.
- The unit cell is the simplest arrangement of points that, when repeated in all three directions, gives the lattice.
- The coordination number of a particle in a crystal is the number of nearest neighbors surrounding it.
