The Hydrogen Bond

• A special type of dipole-dipole force arises between molecules that  have a hydrogen atom bound to a small, electronegative atom.

• The _+ H of one molecule is attracted to the _- (lone pair) on the N,  O, or F of another, and a hydrogen bond (H bond) results.

• The N, O, and F atoms are essential to hydrogen bonding because:

(1) the atoms are strongly electronegative making the H highly d+,

(2) the other atomís lone pair can come close enough to this d+H.
