Molecular Shapes with More than One Central Atom

• Shapes of molecules with more than one central atom are  composites of molecular shapes with a single central atom.

• Ethane (CH3CH3); 4 bonding groups  and no lone pairs around each carbon;  the shape has two joined tetrahedra.

AX4-AX4

• Ethanol (CH 3CH 2OH) has 3 atom centers.

• CH 3 group is AX 4,  CH 2 group is AX 4 ,  both are tetrahedral.

• O atom is (AX2E 2),  so bent.
