Writing Lewis Structures for Molecules with One Central Atom

Problem: Write a Lewis structure for CF 2Cl 2 , one of the compounds suspected of depleting stratospheric ozone.

Solution: Step 1. Decide on the sequence of atoms. In CF 2Cl 2 , carbon has the lowest group number and EN, so it is the central atom.

Step 2. Determine the total number of valence electrons:

• Lewis structures are not used to indicate shape, so an equally correct Lewis structure for NF 3 is :
