Start to read the Introduction but take it slowly. It will make more sense as you read the rest of the novel.
1. Realism. Contrast between the romantic and the real. Why the pretense?
2. Racism or non-racism. See any points in the novel? Anyone made fun of?
3. We are men, you and I--an interesting statement. What does it mean? What are the implications for the novel and racism?
4. Money, profit.
5. The feminized landscape; Africa as woman.
6. Importance of civilization.
