  • Case Book BL Harley MS 2143 fo. 54v. Forgery and other misdemeanors in procuring a grant from Her Majesty of certain lands falsely and by forgery and counterfeiting of a bill or particular thereof. Attorney Rex, plaintiff; William Kirkam, Her Majesty’s sworn servant, defendant: for procuring to himself and his heirs, deceitfully and treacherously, a grant in fee farm from Her Majesty to pass under the great seal of England of diverse the best manors, lands, forests and chases the Queen had in diverse counties by falsely counterfeiting the hand of the Lord Chief Justice, then attorney general, to a bill containing the effect of the said grant in fee farm, whereby he obtained Sir John Fortescue’s, and the Lord Treasurer’s hands there unto to pass it under the Queen’s privy signet, pretending that the same was but a confirmation of a grant to him of the rectories of Gaysley and Warrington for certain years, the which his offence he confessed and cancelled the same grant with his own hands upon his examination before that, before the privy council, yet for that the same offence amounted in substance (though not in law) to the nature of treason, in counterfeiting the great seal and felony, and to the robbery of Her Majesty of her inheritance and of forgery of Her Majesty’s attorney general’s hand, and perjury in breaking his oath, being Her Majesty’s sworn servant; for which offences he was adjudged to stand on the pillory with a paper inscribed for forgery and for counterfeiting and falsely procuring Her Majesty’s signature and great seal and other lewd and indirect treacherous practices and to have one ear cut off, and to stand on the pillory in like manner there other sitting days, and to have the other ears cut off and both his nostrils slit, and to be marked with a hot iron in the forehead with the letter F, perpetual imprisonment, £3000 fine, and close prisoner during Her Majesty’s pleasure.
