  • Case Book BL Harley MS 2143 fo. 15r. A misdemeanor for striking a messenger of the Bishop of London and for striking a justice of peace and for reviling them in speeches. Attorney Rex, plaintiff; Hugh Erswick, armiger, defendant: that the defendant being sent for by a messenger to appear before the Bishop of London for certain ecclesiastical causes, he used unreverent speeches towards the said bishop and refused to obey the messenger and did sore beat him with a cudgel, and that the said defendant did also strike a justice of peace in a church yard being there assembled amongst others for the king’s service, and for reviling him; for all which offences he was fined at £500 and remanded again to the Marshalsea.
