8 May 1560 From my Lord his Grace to Mr. Secretarie

From the Duke of Norfolk's Book of Entries.

Mr. Secretarye,

I SEND you herewith my Lord Graie's Lettres, by the whiche I thinke you shall not so muche understande of the Trewth of the Matter, as you shall by Sir George Howard's Lettre and Valentine Brownes. The Thinge was marvellously ill handled, for to saie the verie Trewth, neither was ther any Breche sautable, no Skaling Ladder longe ynoughe by two Yards or more, nor yet annye flanker taken awaye: So the Matter might have ben ordered (as I am advertised) that the Thinge might have ben wonne with muche lesse losse. Thus hoping that no Body woll thinke Faulte in doing asmuche as lay in my Power, I bydd you farewell, &c.

POSTSCRIPT. The losse being fallen out as it is, I have thought good presently to send, to levie two thousand Men with all expedicion, till I knowe further of the Quene's Majestie's Pleasure; which Nomber (the Caase being as it is) is to far. For Godd's sake take a Care to relieve the Wants, both of Money and Munycions, els this Matter woll quaile; and moo Men, as you thinke good. I have sent four hundred out of Barwick, so that ther remeyneth here but six hundred Footemen.

Tho. Norffolk.
