From the Duke of Norfolk's Book of Entries.

AFTER my most hartie Commendations. I have presentely received a Lettre from Sir James Croffts, whiche I send you herewith. By the same it shall appere unto you amongest other Things, that as the Humes and Carres of the Marches and Tyvidale, have ben longe sought by the Duke and the other Lords o of Scotland, to take parte with them in their common Cause; and also have be procured therto, by suche Means and Practises, as myght be convenyently used on our Parte; wherby they indeede, (favouring for the most Parte the seid Cause, so farr furthe, as concernethe the Expulsion of the French Authorytie and Rewle out of Scotland thoughe percase not throughly inclyned to the Devotion of the seid Duke, and thother Lords in the Matter of Relygion,) have hetherto ben contente to sit still as Newtralls, without shewing themselfs Ennemyes to eyther Partie: So nowe upon the Shewe of our Shippes in the Friethe, and the repaire of our Footmen to the Frontiers, with my Presence here, wherby they see an Apparaunce, that we mynde to assiste the seid Duke, and his Partakers, they seame therfore to seeke som Appointment and Conference with us in thies Matters: For the which a Daye of meeting is appointed by the seid Sir James, as ye shall perceive by his seid Lettres; wherunto I have given hym Lysence and Authoritie at my late beinge at Barwyck, to use the same, as the Caase shuld requyre. And also you shall perceive by the seid Sir James's Lettres, what Couraige and Conforte the Protestants have taken, uppon the Arrivall of our seid Shipps: So as if nowe this Matter may be followed with effect, ther is grete Hope and Lyklyhoode of good Successe therin; whereunto I doubt not you woll putt your good Will.
