Bulkley v Doddington

  • STAC 5/B92/2 - I D - 41 Eliz - Hampshire - John Bulkley v William Doddington
    • From about 1594 onwards he was engaged in a desperate Star Chamber suit against one Bulkeley over his Hampshire land, and was defending a Chancery case brought by Jane Morley of Breamore about copyhold tenure there. He claimed exemption as an official of the Exchequer from prosecution in any other court, but as his long and detailed answer to the Chancery bill survives, this plea may have been overruled. He was in prison for a short time, probably early in 1600, but Anne, Lady Herbert of Chepstow used her influence to get him released on account of ‘his wife’s long service’. Whether or not there was a strain of insanity in Dodington’s family, (his grandson William later committed matricide) on 10 April 1600, the day before he was due to appear again in the Star Chamber, “Dorrington, rich Dorrington ... went up to St. Sepulchre’s steeple, and threw himself over the battlement, and broke his neck. There was found a paper sealed about him, with this superscription, ‘Lord, save my soul, and I will praise thy name’ “. According to Francis Bacon he had ‘walked on the battlements of the church many days and took a view and survey where he should fall’. He left his staff of office on the tower, together with a letter blaming Bulkeley for driving him to suicide. “Surely after they had thus slandered me, every day that I lived was to me a hundred deaths; which caused me to choose rather to die with infamy, than to live with infamy and torment ... I said ‘Jesu, Master have mercy on me’. The unhappy William Dorington the elder”. An enterprising printer named Higgins circulated a broadside about the incident which the Privy Council found ‘very unmeet to be published’. • … the alum works at Parkstone, owned jointly by Huntingdon and Lord Mountjoy. Together with George Carleton, Hastings became involved in a long drawn-out quarrel between the two noblemen over these works. Hastings and Carleton were recommended by Huntingdon and the Earl of Bedford as trustees, and for some time they lived in Mountjoy House in London, trying to settle the complicated financial issues. Mountjoy seems to have had a low opinion of them: ‘if Carleton and Hastings had performed their trust’, he stated in 1570, ‘my debts might have been paid ... which is now far otherwise’. Some time before 1582 Hastings resigned his trusteeship, and later brought a Star Chamber case against John Fulford and others, claiming that largely as a result of the quarrel over the alum works, his opponents had instigated the under-sheriff of Hampshire to seize his goods; in addition, his lands at Hinton and Christchurch had been despoiled. ’Hastings, John’, by N M Fuidge in History of Parliament vols 1558-1603

    • He was fined £500 in Star Chamber for trespassing on the estates of Sir Henry Wallop in 1597, but obtained a free pardon in the new reign, perhaps through the good offices of Sir John Stanhope (I), who had married his wife’s sister. Virginia C D Moseley and Rosemary Sgroi, ‘Kingswell, Sir William’, in History of Parliament 1604-1629 citing STAC 5/W26/32 and STAC 5/W68/11
    • In May 1596 he was accused in the Star Chamber by Sir Henry Wallop and his son of the same name of conniving at the poaching activities of his younger son, also William Kingswell, in Wallop’s deer park. When the matter was brought before the sessions of the peace at Winchester on 20 Apr. 1596, Kingswell, who was a justice, ‘rose from the bench and used means unto divers of the grand jury ... promising great favours’. The jury nevertheless finding against young Kingswell, according to Wallop, his father first bailed him out of prison and then employed a legal device to avoid his punishment.
