SOCKS, SWEATERS BRING HOLIDAY CHEER TO NEEDY

Houston’s warm weather is often deceiving. During the winter months, the city can be a very cold place, particularly for those in need.

With a little help from the University of Houston’s Staff Council and HoustonPBS KUHT, Channel 8, several Houstonians can look forward to a toasty holiday season.

Staff Council’s annual Sock and Blanket Drive benefiting Covenant House Texas and the Star of Hope Mission runs from Monday, Nov. 29 – Thursday, Dec. 16. Items sought for this drive include new socks, new underwear, clean blankets, towels, sheets, coats, sweaters, warm clothing, children's clothing, baby clothing, professional attire and over-the-counter medications. (See below for donation drop-off locations.)

“The Sock and Blanket Drive has become a holiday tradition for Staff Council. These donations are very meaningful to the children and adults, who receive them,” said Joe Papick, Staff Council president. “I encourage everyone to make a donation, no matter how big or small. Even the most modest contribution means a lot.”

KUHT, which is licensed to the UH System Board of Regents, kicked off the Mr. Rogers’ Sweater Drive earlier in November and will collect sweaters for local charities, including the Star of Hope Mission and Christian Charity Services Center though Friday, Dec. 17. (See below for donation drop-off locations.)

“Since we started doing this drive eight years ago, it has been very successful,” said Ann Crider, KUHT’s director of community education and outreach. “We usually collect between 1,500 and 2,000 items.”
