KERRY OFFERS EARTH DAY ADVICE
DURING CAMPUS CAMPAIGN RALLY
Hot on the campaign trail, Democratic
presidential candidate John Kerry offered his own solutions to
America’s environmental problems Thursday during an Earth
Day rally at the University of Houston.
“I believe that we deserve
a president who understands that the quality of air that goes
into the lungs of Americans makes a difference,” Kerry said.
“It makes a difference in our healthcare bills. It makes
a difference in the length of our lives. It makes a difference
in the quality of our lives.”
Kerry’s
presence drew a large number of supporters from UH and the general
public who crowded the stage at Lynn Eusan Park and gathered in
the grassy area just adjacent to The Hilton at the University
of Houston. While his remarks were met with the audience’s
enthusiastic approval, a handful of protesters holding posters
supporting current president, George W. Bush, voiced their differing
opinions.
Taking aim at Bush, Kerry criticized
the president’s energy policies, particularly the decision
to drill for oil in Alaska’s wildlife refuge and the country’s
increased dependence on foreign fuel.
“God only gave the United States
three percent of the world’s oil reserves. For whatever
reason, Saudi Arabia and the Middle East have 65 percent of the
world’s oil reserves,” he said. “The more dependent
we are on foreign fuel, the less independent we are. Let’s
control our destiny. Let’s become masters of our scenario.”
Kerry also emphasized America’s
need to grasp more environmentally sound policies. The slogan,
“Clean Environment = Strong Economy,” was displayed
prominently on a banner above Kerry and on several T-shirts and
signs.
Through thoughtful design and efficient
agricultural decisions, Kerry feels that the American economy
once again will become vibrant.
“We have to be smart. We need
to grow,” he said. “We need to build homes and grow
our cities, but I know we can do it in a way that respects nature.
In doing this, I know we can create the good jobs of the future
that will increase the standard of living for Americans.”
Turning his attention toward college
education, Kerry vowed to help more aspiring students complete
their dreams of graduating from college. He said that no American
should go without a college education because of rising tuition
costs, a message that was well received by his UH supporters.
Kerry confidently stated that through careful taxing more monies
for grants would be available for anyone seeking a degree.
“We’re going to restore
fairness,” he said to a round of applause. “In my
America and your America, no person should downsize their dreams.”
