Procedures for Applying for Admission

Students are admitted to the History graduate program in both the Fall and Spring semesters. Please observe the following deadlines:

Semester Deadline for receipt of application materials
Fall Admission January 15
Spring Admission November 1

Please provide all of the following directly to the Department of History at the mailing address below. The History Department staff will forward the necessary portions of these application materials to the UH Office of Admissions

1.) University of Houston graduate application. (click here). If you choose to use the on line application feature, please also download and send a paper copy to the History Department. International students please note that additional forms may be required.

2.) Department of History graduate application, including Statement of Purpose. Please note that there are separate forms for M.A. and Ph.D. Students interested in the Expedited M.A./Ph.D. program should apply to the Master’s degree program.

3.) Two official transcripts from the colleges/universities you have attended, in sealed envelopes.

4.) Your GRE scores. An official score report must be sent directly to the UH Office of Admissions by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The INST Code for the University of Houston is 6870. NOTE: GRE scores may not be older than five years.

5.) A sample of your writing. For M.A. applicants, this can be an undergraduate research paper or other substantial piece of historical writing. For Ph.D. applicants, this should usually be your M.A. thesis.

6.) Three (3) letters of recommendation from faculty members who know your work (forms are included in the History Department application form)

7.) A $25.00 non-refundable application fee in the form of a check or money order payable to the University of Houston. NOTE: Post-Baccalaureate (PB) application fee does not cover and cannot be applied toward the graduate application fee in History.

If you wish to be considered for a Teaching Assistantship, please submit a T.A. application with the rest of your materials(click here) Please note that Teaching Assistantships generally begin in the Fall semester for the academic year. Assistantships are not regularly available to students entering in the Spring, but Spring admittees are eligible to apply for Teaching Assistantships that begin in the following Fall term. If you are interested in a TAship, please submit the TA application form with your application materials regardless of the semester for which you seek admission.
