UEP Continues Three Year Partnership with TDECU

On Tuesday, April 3, 2018, the Urban Experience Program (UEP) in collaboration with TDECU hosted their final financial workshop, part of the Financial Empowerment Series, for the spring semester. This partnership has been going strong for three years.

The Financial Empowerment Series is designed to provide UEP students and the UH community with financial teaching, resources, and tools to be fiscally responsible and astute. The program consist of a series of workshops that address the financial interest and educational needs of students. This semester, we held three workshops with each having specific topics. Ryan Palma, TDECU Branch Manager, was the speaker for the first workshop which was held on February 6th, titled, “The Road to Financial Independence”. Attendees learned the fundamentals of financial independence, such as money management, credit, renting, and buying a car. On March 6th, TDECU invited Eric Sanchez, Director of Strategic Partnership for Student Choice (TDECU’s third party) to host the second workshop that focused on “Financing Your College Education”. This workshop covered the many different options to consider when financing your education, such as scholarships, grants, and loans. Mr. Sanchez also led the final workshop, “Repaying Student Loans”. Students were educated about the different types of loans and the payback options available for each.

In addition to hosting these workshops during the academic year, Mr. Palma also speaks with incoming freshman during UEP’s Summer Bridge programs. These students learn about TDECU products and services and the benefits of membership prior to starting school in the fall. Many students stated that the information presented during the Financial Empowerment workshops was extremely helpful in motivating them to rethink their approach to their personal finances. UEP looks forward to continuing their partnership with TDECU for another three years with the purpose of empowering UEP students and the UH community to be fiscally responsible in making decisions to help them reach their financial goals.
