The Urban Experience Program supports access to higher education at the Career

On Saturday, February 18, 2017, the Urban Experience Program (UEP) participated in the Houston Hispanic Forum’s 31st annual Career & Education Day (CED) at the George R. Brown Convention Center. CED is a free day-long family event in which approximately 13,000 students from more than 74 school districts in the Greater Houston area are given an opportunity to dream of rewarding career and education opportunities. At this event students, and their parents, are exposed to career paths that lead to more than 55 career options.

UEP was one of the event exhibitors, representing the University of Houston as part of the event’s new mentoring section, #ProgramLIT (Leaders in Training). UEP’s table joined those of Houston’s top mentoring organizations, including Big Brothers and Sisters and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). Manning the table was a team of UEP volunteers that chose to spend their Saturday helping make higher education a reality for more students. In addition to offering students and families information about the mentorship opportunities available through UEP, the student volunteers also shared information about Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), the Dream.US scholarship, and answering any other questions students and families had.

UEP also contributed to the CED Program by being on a breakout session panel. The Program’s Director Dr. Raven Jones, Program Coordinator Ms. Sharlene Laud, and UEP alum Joseph Gallegos presented to an audience of students and parents about the importance of seeking first-year support programs when they get to campus. They explained the process of joining UEP, the benefits of participating in a student success program, and how students should get involved on campus.
