Scholars' Recognizes Members

The University of Houston’s Scholars’ Community hosted their annual Staff and Scholarship Award Luncheon on May 11th to honor eight students with scholarships ranging from $750 to $1,000. Awarded to active Scholars’ Community members based on academic success and financial need, these scholarships are given in honor of the initial underwriters of the program.

The following students were awarded Scholars’ Community Scholarships in the amount of $750 each: Mario Ortegon, in honor of Edward F. Ahnert, President of the Exxon Education Foundation and one of the original co-founders of Scholars’ Community; Michelle Mize, in honor of The George and Anne Butler Foundation and Noemi Martinez, in honor of the Exxon Education Foundation. Uyen Truong received a Jesse Jones Scholarship in honor of the Houston Endowment. Additionally, Demetria Broussard won the Scholars’ Community Staff Scholarship in the amount of $750.

The Meredith and Miriam York Foundation Scholarships were awarded to Maria Ahmed, Jeffery Whitaker and Gervin Williams in the amount of $1,000.

Guest speakers included Dr. Rodolfo Cortina, Assistant Vice President for Undergraduate Studies, and Dr. Steven Mintz, HFAC Associate Dean. The Scholars’ Community’s Executive Director Dr. Joseph Pratt and Program Director Dr. William Kellar also gave remarks.

The Scholars’ Community (SC) is a model learning community program that aims to redefine the college experience for urban students. SC’s Freshman program is aimed at developing and refining their student’s academic study skills. SC offers their Sophomores concrete academic advising that assists them in choosing a major that best suits their skills and personality. Juniors and Seniors receive support with solid career planning strategies so they can turn their diploma into a full-fledged career or move into a graduate program.
