About this event

Professor Wei-Chuan Shih and his team have developed monolithic plasmonic meta-surfaces that feature intense and high-density hot spots, large surface area and high structural integrity and reproducibility. Harnessing localize surface plasmons (LSP) and coupling modes, they have engineered enhanced light-matter interactions near the meta-surfaces for amplification-free/PCR-free ultrasensitive biosensing assays of various biomarkers including ions, nucleic acids, proteins, metabolites, vesicles, cells and pathogens, and tissue. The group’s technologies generally aim to achieve ultra-high performance with reduced instrumental cost and size, and simplified sample preparation protocols, potentially making them field-deployable and point-of-care friendly.

About the Speaker

Wei-Chuan Shih, Ph.D., is the Cullen College of Engineering Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He received a Ph.D. from MIT and joined University of Houston in 2009. He received the MIT Martin Fellowship, NSF CAREER Award, NASA Early CAREER Faculty Award, and several research and innovation awards at UH. He is a SPIE Fellow and Senior Member of NAI, OSA and IEEE. He has published 80 journal papers and hold 17 granted U.S. patents. He is an Associate Editor for OSA Optics Express and SPIE Journal of Nanophotonics. His research interests include biophotonics, nanobiophotonics, imaging & spectroscopy, micro/nanofabrication and machine learning.
