UH Rec Re-opening Information

Campus Recreation has modified its operations due to COVID-19 and we are eager to welcome you back to the facility for in-person workouts beginning on August 10th. Please review the following information to become familiar with the different modifications made and reach out to us with any questions.

Hours of Operation – Effective Monday, August 24:

  • Monday - Thursday 10:00 am – 9:00 pm
  • Friday 10:00 am - 8:00 pm
  • Saturday 10:00 am – 6:00 pm
  • Sunday 12:00 pm - 6:00 pm

*Appointments to rent gear from Outdoor Adventure must be made and confirmed at least 24-hours in advance by emailing outdoors@uh.edu or calling (713) 743-9512.

  • Reservation is required. Reservations can be made each hour for 50-minute increments thru myrec.uh.edu.
  • Face Coverings must be worn to cover the mouth and nose.
  • 6 ft of physical distancing must be maintained at all times.
  • Each person must have their own basketball. These are available at Equipment Check-Out if needed.
  • No more than 2 people will be allowed to shoot at a basketball goal.
  • Activities/competitions that involve direct contact are not permitted; shooting only.
  • Please wipe down your equipment before and after use with the wipes that are available by each court.
Fitness Zone Open Reservation is not required. Space available on a first-come, first-served basis. Some equipment and machines may be unavailable to facilitate social distancing.
  • Spotting is not allowed.
  • One person per bench; please do not share equipment.
  • Patrons no longer need a Free Weight Pass in order to work-out in this space. We are opening it up to all patrons who have a fitness floor reservation as long as they can physically distance and there is an available piece of equipment.
Track Open Reservation is not required. Space available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Two lanes will be open on the indoor track.
  • The inside lane is for walking and the outside lane is for running.
  • Closed lanes may only be used for passing.
  • Participants may NOT walk/run two by two.

Make a Rec Center Access Reservation- Quick Link

Beginning August 10, to work out in person, all members must register for a specific work-out time. Reservations may be made for a 50-minute session and members may only register for one reservation per day. Time slots will be available 24-hours in advance online for your convenience. This reservation system will allow us to promote your safe return to our facility by maintaining capacities, practicing distancing, and properly cleaning equipment. All individuals must have a current membership to reserve access to the CRWC, and no guest passes or individual day passes will be sold at this time.

  • Visit https://myrec.uh.edu/
    • Log-in using your CougarNet ID and password
  • Select “Programs
  • Under Classification, select “Rec Center Access Reservation
  • Select “Area of Facility” that you would like to use (i.e. Climbing Wall, Badminton, etc.)
  • Select preferred work-out time up to 24-hours in advance
    • A time slot will not be visible once it is full.
  • Once you have selected your reservation, follow the prompts to “check-out” for $0.
  • You will receive an email receipt confirming your reservation. Confirm your email address. Please save the receipt to present to Campus Recreation staff to gain access.

Participants with reservations may arrive at the CRWC for their work-out up to 30-minutes prior to the scheduled reservation.

  • Present your receipt with the date and time visible to Campus Recreation staff at ID check; then swipe your Cougar ID card to access the facility.
  • Proceed to the designated location to complete check-in for your reserved work out time. There will be physical distancing markers to indicate where to wait for your reservation to begin.
    • Lap Swim - Natatorium
      • All personal belongings must be secured on the first floor during this time. There will not be lockers available in the Fitness Zone and personal belongings are not allowed in this space.
    • Badminton, Table Tennis, Squash, & Racquetball – Center Court
    • Climbing Wall - Center Court
  • Individuals who have not arrived by 10-minutes after the hour will forfeit their reservation.
  • Cancel up to 1-hour prior to the reservation time.

    • Log-in using your CougarNet ID and password
  • Click on your username (or your photo) to view your profile.
  • Select “Programs” and select your current reservation. If you have multiple registrations, please search for the current reservation. They will not be in order.
  • Select “Cancel” and verify cancellation.
  • Campus Recreation is committed to serving as many members as safely possible and due to decreased capacity requirements, missed reservations may lead to a loss of privileges to make reservations in the future.
  • Individuals without a reservation may ask to be placed on the “stand-by” list for a particular hour in the event that someone does not attend a reservation.
  • To be placed on stand-by, an individual must be present and request Campus Recreation staff in the Rotunda add you to the list.
  • At 10- minutes past the hour, any available spots will be given to those on stand-by on a first-come, first-serve basis.

University of Houston Department of Campus Recreation has implemented the following protocols to provide a safe and enjoyable workout experience for the University of Houston community.

  • All Campus Recreation staff must complete all UH required trainings prior to returning to work on campus.
  • Campus Recreation will conduct training related to COVID-19 precautions, cleaning/disinfecting equipment, minimizing physical contact with patrons, physical distancing, risk management and emergency response.
  • All staff must wear a cloth face covering at all times, and additional PPE when cleaning equipment or responding to emergencies.
  • Plexiglas barriers were installed at customer service stations.
  • Card swipes are relocated to allow members to swipe their own card.
  • Payment methods at Member Services have been modified to only accept credit cards and allow for the member to swipe their own card or use contactless payment options.
  • Staff will regularly monitor and clean equipment and touchpoints.
  • Visual markers are throughout the facility to support 6-foot distancing.
  • All fitness equipment is spaced with at least 6 feet between them.
  • Equipment will not be checked out. For activities that would require additional equipment, members will be required to provide their own.
  • Disinfectant wipe stations are placed throughout the fitness floor, and hand sanitizer stations have been added.
  • Water fountains are closed; however, water bottle filling stations will remain open.
  • Access to day-use lockers will be rotated to practice distancing and allow time for disinfecting.
  • Lost and found items will not be stored; UHPD will be called to pick up valuable items daily and all other items will be discarded at the end of the day.
  • Capacities are reduced in each activity area to support physical distancing. Capacities will gradually increase as the guidelines, available staff and supplies allow.
  • Fitness Zone
    • Spotting is not allowed.

  • Stay at home if you are sick or are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19 as outlined on the UH COVID-19 website.
  • Wash and sanitize your hands frequently.
  • Practice physical distancing of at least 6 feet from others.
  • Clean all equipment before and after use.
  • Minimize the number of belongings you bring to the facility that will not be used directly for your participation. Do remember to bring your own towel, water bottle. Equipment (badminton, table tennis, squash & racquetball) will be available for check out.
  • Wear a face covering at all times.

The following programs are currently suspended until further notice. As guidelines, staff, supplies, and resources are available, additional programs will be reviewed and modified. Campus Recreation is dedicated to offering a robust program schedule in a safe and reasonable manner.
