Peer Assistant Leaders

Peer Assistant Leaders (PALs) will work for the UHin4 program which is designed to help students graduate within four years. The PAL program is designed to coach students while identifying and assisting with barriers that may impact academics. There are 2 positions that students can apply for:

  • Peer Assistant Leader (PAL)
  • Peer Assistant Leader (PAL) Coordinator

PALs will be assigned a group of UHin4 students that they will coach and regularly communicate with to help them succeed academically. PALs will be trained on how to effectively coach students and will also receive support from PAL Coordinators.

 PAL Coordinators will work closely with professional staff to provide PALs with the support they need to coach UHin4 students. PAL Coordinators will also set deadlines and ensure all timelines are being met.

Mandatory Training

  • Peer Assistant Leader training: Evenings of August 26-27

Characteristics

Students applying for a Peer Assistant Leadership position should possess and demonstrate the following:

  • Understanding and support of the goals and philosophies of the University of Houston and the Peer Assistant Leadership program.
  • Desire to serve others.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong work ethic and time management skills
  • Ability to encourage academic success and to motivate self and others.
  • Ability to establish rapport with peers, students, parents, faculty and staff.
  • Ability to serve as a positive role model demonstrating good judgment and ethical behavior.
  • Ability to set a positive tone for interaction, demonstrating responsibility and respect for others’ rights, feelings, lifestyles, diverse backgrounds, and for personal and University property.
  • Ability to work on a team and to be flexible.
  • Strong demonstration of leadership abilities.
  • Ability to navigate University of Houston website.
  • Knowledge of University of Houston campus resources.
  • Previous experience with Microsoft Office and PeopleSoft (my.uh.edu) preferred.

Qualifications

  • Be awarded work study.
  • Good academic standing, with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
  • Completed at least 30 credit hours in residence at the University of Houston by conclusion of the Summer 2019 semester.
  • Available to work in the fall 2019 and spring 2020 semester.

Job Duties

  • Attend required trainings and meetings
  • Regularly communicate with the professional staff
  • Manage PALs and provide them with the support required for them to assist UHin4 students
  • Set deadlines for PALs and ensure all timelines are being met
  • Develop positive relationships with PALs
  • Serve as a positive leader and role model
  • Attend required trainings and meetings
  • Regularly communicate with assigned group of UHin4 students
  • Connect students with university resources
  • Encourage students to be involved on campus
  • Meet with students in person, if applicable
  • Coordinate and host study sessions
  • Coach assigned group of UHin4 students
  • Communicate university information regarding important deadlines
  • Develop positive relationships with assigned group of UHin4 students

Time Commitment

  • Mandatory training sessions
  • Approximately 8-12 hours per week during the fall 2019 and spring 2020 semester
