Office of the Provost Welcomes Margot Lee Shetterly

Dear Class of 2021,

Over the summer, you were encouraged to read Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Who Helped Win the Space Race as part of the Provost Summer Read Program. The book tells the story of talented African American women known as "human computers" who helped launch the first American astronauts into space. Your professors have encouraged you to read and reflect on the book, and I hope you have each felt inspired to explore the "hidden figures" in your own life.

I invite you to hear the author, Margot Lee Shetterly, speak about her inspiration for writing the book. She will be on campus on Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at 7:00 pm in the Wortham Theatre for a discussion of the book and a fireside chat with Dr. Ellen Ochoa, Director of the NASA Johnson Space Center. The event is free to attend, but reservations are required. To attend, please email Tonja Jones at director@uh.edu or call (713) 743 8838.

In addition, there will be a screening of the Hidden Figures film at 1:30 pm in the Student Center Theater on October 3, 2017. This is not a ticketed event, and seats will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Warmest regards,

Paula Myrick Short, Provost
