ACES / Historic Third Ward UH Community Schools Initiative February 4, 2016

Dear Faculty and Staff,

I am pleased to announce the launch of the Advancing Community Engagement and Service Institute (ACES). Housed in the College of Education, the ACES Institute will focus on increasing University of Houston student retention and engagement through service learning, positive community impact, and support of community-based research and publications. Over time, the ACES Institute will facilitate service learning curriculum development, training in research-based service approaches, oversight of service learning placement, and supervision of service learning activities. In addition, the institute will be a central data repository of all the community outreach occurring at the University of Houston. Through this repository, UH will be able track impact, build evaluation components into community engagement and service, and promote the important work of our University in the community.

On February 8, 2016, as an inaugural project, the ACES Institute will begin Historic Third Ward UH Community Schools Initiative to help guide and fuel school improvement efforts. In partnership with HISD and the Barbara Bush Institute, ACES will provide reading tutoring and training, as well as middle school tutoring and high school college access activities.

As Provost, I am pleased to be a part of the continued mission to increase the bonds between the University of Houston community and the city of Houston, and hope that this connection will continue to positively affect the lives of our students, teachers, and faculty.
