Updates from the Office of the Provost May 12, 2014

Dear UH Faculty and Staff:

I am pleased to provide you with these important updates. I value your input and suggestions and ask that you email your comments to me at

Provost Summer Read Program

In an effort to create a shared experience among first year students, the Office of the Provost has implemented the Provost Summer Read Program. Incoming freshmen will read and participate in faculty-led seminar discussions of the book Step Out on Nothing: How Faith and Family Helped Me Conquer Life's Challenges by Byron Pitts. The author will be on campus September 15 for events associated with the reading of his book. For more information and to sign up to lead a seminar, please visit the website.

New Law Center Dean

Iam pleased to announce the selection of Leonard Baynes, Professor of Law and the Inaugural Director of The Ronald H. Brown Center for Civil Rights and Economic Development at St. John's University School of Law, for the position of Dean of the University of Houston Law Center. The recommendation was approved by the UH System Board of Regents on May 7, 2014. Professor Baynes is expected to begin his duties on August 15.For more information, please see the Law Center news release, here.

Faculty and Staff Compensation Considerations

We believe that providing competitive compensation to our faculty and staff is critical to maintaining excellence in instruction, research, academic support, and administrative effectiveness. For FY15, the University of Houston will fund faculty promotions and after revenues are determined, consider additional compensation in the form of one-time bonuses for full-time, benefits-eligible faculty and staff earning $50,000 or less. This pool of resources may be increased depending on fall enrollment.

I welcome your comments on these items and appreciate your contributions to the University's accomplishments in ensuring student success and national prominence.
