Dean Patricia Oliver featured in Houston CityBook Portrait Collection

Local magazine Houston CityBook honored Patricia Oliver, dean of the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design, in its inaugural "BBVA Compass Presents Leaders & Legends" portrait series. Oliver, the leader, is paired with the legendary Gerald D. Hines, who has donated millions to UH to support the college named after him. "The problems our students and faculty seek to solve here are transmutable to cities around the globe," said Oliver in her interview. Read the CityBook feature here.

Assistant Professor Recognized for Research on Strategic Communication and Activism

Dr. Erica Ciszek, assistant professor in integrated strategic communication, was recognized at frank 2018 for her research on how activists use strategic communication.  "Even though activists may not have formal training in strategic communications, they are employing the skills and tactics that we would commonly associate with public relations to create a social change. They are building content that has universal appeal and creating creative messaging that is global but with very local specificity," remarked Dr. Ciszek. Read full story.

Students Exhibit Robots Created in UH Makerspace

Kaushik Mandiga and Denny Luong, electrical and computer engineering students, exhibited robots they made in the UH Makerspace, which opened this spring in the M.D. Anderson Library, at the 2018 Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Heads Association (ECEDHA) conference in California. ECEDHA is a non-profit that serves a membership of about 300 colleges and universities. "The UH Makerspace is an exciting place for students to build projects in their free time and a great outlet to experiment with ideas," Luong said. Read the full story.


UH Industrial Design Student Wins 2018 IDSA Southern District Student Merit Award 

Jonathan Seto, a senior industrial design student, has won the 2018 IDSA Southern District Student Merit Award (SMA). The IDSA SMA competition highlights the very best creativity, problem solving, and design brilliance across each of IDSA's five Design Districts. Jonathan Seto represents the Southern District and is named as one of the top five graduates in the United States for 2018. He will be invited to the IDSA International Conference in September for the formal awards presentation. Jonathan is the third SMA winner from the UH ID program since we joined the IDSA in 2007, preceded by Arvin Abadilla (2010), and Leo Chen (2011).

UH Librarian Named 2018-19 MLA Rising Star

Congratulations to Rachel Helbing, interim director of library services for the health sciences at the University of Houston Libraries, who has been named a 2018-2019 Rising Star from the Medical Library Association (MLA). The MLA Rising Star program was developed to give members the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge, and personal characteristics needed to become a leader in the association. Each Rising Star is matched with a mentor in a curriculum that includes opportunities to learn more about the organization, experiences, and training to develop leadership skills, and individualized projects that contribute to improving the MLA.
