Senior Digital Media Student Earns Dream Job at NASA

Monika Kalam, a senior digital media student in the College of Technology, developed a summer engineering tech internship into a full-time position with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Johnson Space Center. "Being on the inside of the center is a very special honor. I have grown to realize the importance of my role. I am glad the door of opportunity was opened for me at NASA and that I took advantage of it" said Monika. As the web/social media specialist at the Johnson Space Center, she works with the astronauts to update their social media, design web pages, and collect photos and personal stories about their missions. UH Libraries Dean Lisa German Chosen for GWLA Board

Dean Lisa German was selected as an at-large member of the GWLA board.

Dean of the University of Houston Libraries Lisa German was recently elected as an at-large member of the Greater Western Library Alliance (GWLA) Board of Directors. GWLA is a consortium of 36 research libraries located in the central and western U.S., and is a nationally recognized leader in the transformation of scholarly communication and a facilitator in the application of new information technologies. Dean German will begin her term on the board effective January 1, 2017.

Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management Professors Dr. Priyanko Guchait and Dr. Jay Neal received the Best Paper designation at the 2016 International Council of Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education Conference. Their winning paper is titled "Reducing Food Safety Violations: The Role of Leader Behavioral Integrity for Food Safety, Error Reporting, and Error Management." The conference was held July 20-22 in Dallas.

Dr. Mini Das, assistant professor of physics in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, was awarded a highly competitive $1 million Breakthrough Award Level 2 grant from the Breast Cancer Research Program, administered by the Department of Defense. This three-year grant was one of only 15 awarded for 2016. Learn More

University of Houston Law Center Professor Sandra Guerra Thompson's research on crime labs was recently recognized by the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. The council referenced Thompson's book, "Cops in Lab Coats: Curbing Wrongful Convictions through Independent Forensic Laboratories," in the footnotes contained in its report on forensic science in criminal courts. Thompson's book was published in 2015 by the Carolina Academic Press, and tells the story of the Houston Police Department's lab and issues raised with forensic labs serving as a unit of a police department. University of Houston Libraries Special Collections has received a grant to digitize and increase access to two important series from the KUHT Collection. The TexTreasures grant in the amount of $24,305 will provide for the digitization of “The Capitol Report,” a series on the Texas legislature that was broadcast in the early 1990s; and “Almanac,” a news magazine focusing on local matters and featuring prominent businesspeople and politicians of the day.
