Cortina Honored with National Award

Dr. Jeronimo Cortina, Associate Professor of Political Science in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, was awarded the "Theodore J. Lowi Policy Studies Journal Best Article Award."  The article was published in the Public Policy Section of the American Political Science Association, and titled "Subsidizing Migration? Mexican Agriculture Policies and Migration to the United States."  Congratulations to Dr. Cortina!

Lewis Inspires Students at Provost Summer Read Forum

Harvard University Professor Sarah Lewis spoke to students, faculty, and staff on Wednesday, September 23 in Cullen Performance Hall.  Lewis is the author of "The Rise: Creativity, the Gift of Failure, and the Search for Mastery", the book selected for the 2015 Provost Summer Read. Her writing has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Art Forum, and Art in America.

A former member of President Obama's Arts Policy Committee, Lewis has also served as a curator at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Tate Modern in London.  

During her publc forum, Lewis elaborated on how the discovery of new ways to recover from loss or failures can help shape future success.  While on campus, she also met privately with selected students. Following her remarks at the forum, Sarah signed copies of her book.

Applied Economics Degree Ranks 6th

Congratulations to the Economics Department! The UH Masters of Arts in Applied Economics ranks sixth among other applied economics master's degree programs by "The Financial Engineer" 2015 Master of Economics Rankings.  The program ranks 34th overall for master's degrees in economics in the nation.  According to the TFE website, these are the most comprehensive rankings for graduate economics programs in the United States. Financial engineering is the application of mathematical methods to the solution of problems in finance and draws on tools from applied mathematics, computer science, statistics, and economic theory.

"We are excited about this ranking and proud of our past graduates," said Rebecca Achee Thornton, director of the M.A. in Applied Economics Program and clinical assistant professor in the Department of Economics at UH. "Our students have strong academic backgrounds, which sets the stage for progress in our program. Job placement has been strong, which is, of course, the ultimate goal of our graduates."

Mariam Manuel Nominated for White House Honor

Mariam Manuel, teachHOUSTON Alumna and University Adjunct Professor,  was nominated by the National Math & Science Initiative for the White House Champion of Change Award in the Young Women Empowering Communities category.  Mariam is the Instructional Specialist for the Robert Shaw Center for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics for the Katy Independent School District.  Listen to her discuss more about her success.

College of Pharmacy Invited to Join Texas Medical Center Collaboration

The College of Pharmacy is among the institutional collaborators in the newly established Houston Center of Excellence in Primary Care Education at The Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center.  The Houston Center is one of two new sites competitively selected to join the five existing Centers of Excellence nationwide.  The goal of the program is to educate interprofessional trainees from medicine, mental health, undergraduate nursing, advanced practice nursing, pharmacy, and other health professions to deliver high-quality, patient-centered, team-based primary care. Essential to the success of the program are the planned didactic and practice-based curricula, mentoring relationships amongst behavioral health and primary care, and the continuous identification of novel practice structures and methods for education.  UHCOP participation will be spearheaded by Dr. Cathy Hatfield, clinical associate professor, director of Interprofessional Education, and director of Institutional Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences.

Moores Concert Chorale Ranked Top Three Worldwide

The Moores Concert Chorale continues to hit high notes months after earning World Championship honors at the Grand Prix of Nations in Magdeburg, Germany. Based on its captivating performances at that festival, the Chorale is now ranked number three in a recent list of the world's leading choirs.  Interkultur, an organizer of international choral festivals and competitions recently released its world rankings.  The Chorale's award-winning performance in Germany propelled it to the number three spot on Interkultur's Top 1,000 Choirs in the world. It also took the top ranking in Interkultur's list of the 50 best Children's and Youth Choirs.  UH is the only U.S. choir to be ranked in the top 10 of the latter category.
