Welcome Back Coogs!

As we begin a new semester, I want to welcome back our faculty, staff, and returning Cougars, and also welcome our freshman and transfer students.  This is a great year to be at the University of Houston.

We have outstanding new faculty joining our ranks, as well as, a very strong first year class of students. Each of you is a great asset to our University and we are honored you are part of the Cougar family.

I also invite you to join me on September 23 at Cullen Performance Hall to hear Sarah Lewis, the author of our oustanding Provost Summer Read book, "The Rise".  Ms. Lewis will speak more about her journey and reflections, and also personally answer student questions.

Again, welcome back to the University. I wish each of you a very productive and meaningful semester.

Hilton College Student Wins National Scholarship

HRM Student Cody Taylor

Hilton College student Cody Taylor will take the Cougar spirit to Thailand.

Hilton College junior, Cody Taylor, will embark on a global hospitality adventure this September, thanks in part to a prestigious national scholarship. Taylor, who will spend the semester at Mahidol University near Bangkok, was awarded a $5,000 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, part of a national program created to offer study-abroad and internship opportunities to students who might otherwise not be able to participate due to financial constraints. At Mahidol, one of Asia’s top universities, Taylor will take hospitality marketing, lodging and housekeeping management, and human resources management. He is the only student from UH to participate in the Thailand program this year. “I want to learn about the culture and see a different side of hospitality. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me. I never thought I would be able to experience something like this … It will be incredibly enriching, and I can’t wait to get there,” he said. Taylor also said he is looking forward to sharing his experiences with fellow Coogs when he gets home—and, of course, helping promote the University’s amazing study-abroad programs. Safe travels, Cody!

Pharmacy Students Earn National Honors

Pharmacy Student Group

The University of Houston College of Pharmacy chapter of the Student National Pharmaceutical Association claimed the SNPhA/Rite Aid Chauncey I. Cooper Chapter Excellence Award at the organization's 2015 Annual Meeting July 24-27 in Orlando.

The chapter not only won the Overall National Chapter of the Year title, but also the top-ranked Large Category Chapter. There are more than 90 SNPhA chapters across the nation, including 14 large chapters with more than 100 members each. This year's victory is even sweeter as the chapter was a finalist for the Large Category Chapter and Overall Chapter for the prior three consecutive years.
