Senior Chosen for Special Award

Joel DeLeon
UH College of Education Senior Joel DeLeon, 2016 Student Employee of the Year.

Senior Joel DeLeon received the Student Employee of the Year award in a ceremony honoring campus leaders on April 21, 2016. The nomination process considered five key areas: reliability, quality of work, initiative, professionalism, and uniqueness of contribution. He was selected from over 30 nominated students submitted by University of Houston faculty and staff.

Joel DeLeon has served as a peer mentor for the Greater Texas Foundation (GTF) Scholars program for the past three years, where he helps GTF Scholars navigate through academic and personal pathways to better transition to UH in their first year and beyond. His personal commitment to his work allowed him to take initiatives within the program, leading student meetings, small group peer-meetings, train other volunteer group meetings and host monthly cohort meetings. He will graduate this spring with a secured position in the Houston public school system.

These students were assisted by Richard Armstrong, Jennifer Asmussen, David Rainbow, and Karen Weber at the Honors College and by Leah Scott in Global Strategies and Studies. As part of the Houston Scholars program, these faculty and staff members help students to hone their skills at competitive awards and proposal writing through faculty mentorship and group discussions.
