Eight students are traveling in China for the U.S.-China Collaboration on Landslide Research and Student Training summer program. This eight-week International Research Experience for Students (IRES) program, funded by a National Science Foundation grant and hosted by the University of Houston and the China University of Geosciences (CUG), provides undergraduate and graduate students hands-on research experience in landslide surveying, mapping, monitoring, and early-warning.

Five students - Eleanor Dietz, Julie Monluc, Lynn Nguyen, Keyin Scott, and Vasilios Tsibanos - represent the University of Houston. The field investigations are supervised by Dr. Guoquan (Bob) Wang from UH and three professors at CUG, Drs. Huiming Tang, Hanwen Zhou, and Changqian Ma.

On June 21, the students flew to Beijing, where they visited the U.S. Embassy, the China National Geological Museum, and a land subsidence monitoring facility affiliated with the Beijing University of Technology. The IRES students then attend a two-week intensive Chinese language and cultural course at the CUG, followed by three weeks of fieldwork in the Three Gorges Reservoir area. At the end of July, the students will return to Houston for a one-week program wrap-up. Read the full story.
