School Adoption Program

Pratham@UH through their fundraising efforts sponsored a school in Hundimala, Mysore(India) from July 2010 – December 2010

A total of 57 students ranging from grade 2nd – 7th grade were part of this school program. Based on a Pre-test assessment of the students 23% were not able to read anything, 49% were able to read letters, 28% were able to read words and no student was able to read sentences or a story. Under the supervision of Miss Poornima (volunteer) the students were introduced to the Pratham models of Pre-school education, Reading and Mathematics. The learning outcome towards the end of the program was 93% were able to read a complete story. In mathematics as well the students showed a positive shift in learning gains.

Pratham@UH is pleased with the improvement of the students reading and writing skills. We thank every member of Pratham Mysore for their continued support and dedication to helping these students. Pratham@UH plans to build stronger relationships with the students by starting programs to assist the efforts of the Pratham volunteers in the school.

Story Writing Workshop

The success of its first Story Writing Workshop in 2007, published 400,000 copies of their stories and was distributed all over India. This initiated Pratham@UH to organize their second "Story Writing Workshop" on April 5th 2010.

The workshop provided an opportunity for University students to contribute their thoughts, ideas and stories to Pratham kids in India to help educate them. It was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Chitra Divakaruni (an award winning author and poet) who motivated students to write simple and fun filled stories. Mrs. Usha Rane (Programme Director – Pratham India), constantly supported Pratham@UH initiatives and provided vital directions from India. The main motive behind organizing the workshop was to generate essays and stories for Pratham Books. More than 50 stories were collected from participants who included not only University of Houston students but also students from Syracuse University and University of Florida who participated online.

Many of these stories will be reviewed and published by Pratham books in India to contribute to the 'Read India Program' in the form of story cards. This collection of stories written by the people from different cultural backgrounds will give the kids broader view of the world around them. This event also underlines the fact that it is not only through monetary help that we can contribute towards a goal, a dream, but also through simpler ways like writing to put a smile on a child's face.

Blackboard Program

In this activity we targeted the supplies to the school. We donated 250 blackboards with Pratham@UH logo printed on them. The blackboards will be used by the schools at least for a few years. These blackboards were distributed by Pratham Mumbai.

Our mission is to make direct and indirect contributions, to give the students of University of Houston a platform to make difference and we are proud that we have been making some difference and we will continue doing the same.
